Sloppy Joes used to be one of my favorite recipes, but I realized that I had never made a plant-based version! This recipe is so simple, that all you have to do is sub out your ground beef for a plant-based version. My meat-eating friend couldn’t even tell the difference, yet it is a lot healthier for you! Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound of ground beef subsitute ( I love Trader Joe’s for this! )
- 1/2 cup of chopped red onion
- 1/2 cup finely chopped red or green pepper
- 8 ounces tomato sauce or diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 to 4 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (I use Vegan without the anchovies)
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon of chili flakes
- Hamburger buns
- Sliced pickles
Cooking Directions
-
Set a large pot over medium-low heat. Add a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil, and saute the garlic for a minute or two until just fragrant and very light golden brown. Add onion and pepper and cook for a few minutes until soft.
-
Add ground beef, increase heat to medium/medium high, and cook until brown or done.
-
While meat is browning, make sauce. In a medium bowl, stir together tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, chili powder, chili flakes and freshly ground black pepper & salt to taste, until well combined.
-
Pour over browned meat, stir, and simmer for a few minutes until heated through (or longer, if you have time, to allow the flavors to meld).
-
Serve on hamburger buns
